Painting by Doug Quarles

Stephen knew that he wanted to be an artist early in his life and at 7 years old he sketched the pastor in church to get through the sermons. When young Stephen saw Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarf's" he drew constantly and never missed an animated Disney film - to this day. The Artist's he admired most included N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parish and George Inness.  In the pursuit of life art was laid aside but not forgotten and after a battle with Cancer in 1989 - Stephen began to dream again,
and all of the canvases that he had painted in his mind, all those past years, began to flood before his eyes.

His philosophy of life and art remains constant in simplicity; in truth and in work.  His ethic is rooted in the discipline of painting where there and only there upon the canvas can the visions become reality.

Stephen resides with his wife Brenda and their daughter Sarah in Pollock, Louisiana.

Artist's own words: My art has been described as romantic realism and has universal themes of myth, folklore and history. In the pursuit of life, art was laid aside but not forgotten and after a battle with Cancer in 1989 - I began to dream again, and all of the canvases that I had painted in my mind, all  those past years, began to flood before my eyes.  My philosophy of life and art remains constant in simplicity; in truth and in work. My ethic is rooted in the discipline of painting where there and only there upon the canvas can the visions become reality. While I am exploring light and shadow in my paintings, I also seek to record those fleeting, secret moments of truth that are hidden in these times of hurry and extreme".
